The Indian Air Force chief indicated that the country could close the purchase of 114 Rafale fighter jets from France before the end of the current financial year.
The Indian Air Force chief, Air Chief Marshal Rakesh Kumar Singh, told reporters that the government is on track to finalize the procurement of 114 Rafale fighter jets from France before the end of the current financial year. The decision follows the recent signing of the contract for the first batch of 36 aircraft, which was completed in 2022. Singh added that the remaining 78 aircraft would be delivered in subsequent years as per the agreed schedule. The deal, valued at approximately ₹1.4 trillion, is part of India's broader effort to modernize its air fleet and enhance strategic deterrence.
The Rafale jets are expected to replace older aircraft models and provide advanced air combat capabilities. The Indian government has been negotiating the terms of the deal for several years, with the final payment and delivery dates still under discussion. The procurement is seen as a key step in strengthening India's defence ties with France.
Analysts note that the finalization of the deal will require swift clearance of financial and diplomatic approvals. However, the Air Force chief expressed confidence that the process would be completed within the fiscal year, citing the government's commitment to defence procurement.
