Researchers in India have documented a surge in newly identified frog species, yet about 33% of the country’s amphibians are now classified as highly threatened.

India’s herpetologists have reported a rapid increase in the number of frog species being formally described, reflecting intensified field surveys across the subcontinent. The discoveries span diverse habitats, from the Western Ghats to the Northeastern hill ranges, and add to the nation’s rich amphibian biodiversity.

Despite the encouraging taxonomic progress, a recent assessment indicates that roughly one‑third of India’s amphibian fauna is now listed as threatened. Habitat fragmentation, agricultural expansion, water pollution and climate‑induced changes are identified as the primary drivers pushing these species toward extinction.

Conservationists urge immediate action, calling for expanded protected‑area networks, habitat restoration projects and stronger enforcement of existing wildlife laws. Continued research and community‑based monitoring are deemed essential to safeguard the newly discovered species and the broader amphibian community.
