Indian officials performed a traditional Bhoomi Poojan ceremony today to mark the start of construction of a new High Commission in Canberra, underscoring deepening India‑Australia ties.
New Delhi’s diplomatic team gathered in Canberra on Monday to perform a Bhoomi Poojan, a traditional Hindu ground‑blessing ritual, signalling the commencement of work on a new Indian High Commission building. The ceremony was attended by the Indian High Commissioner, senior embassy staff and representatives of the Australian government, who together offered prayers for the project’s success.
The event reflects the growing strategic partnership between India and Australia, which has accelerated in recent years across trade, defence and people‑to‑people exchanges. Officials highlighted that the new premises will provide expanded facilities for consular services, cultural outreach and diplomatic engagement, aligning with both countries’ objectives to deepen cooperation.
Construction of the new compound is slated to begin shortly after the ceremony, with the completed High Commission expected to serve as a modern hub for India’s diplomatic activities in the region. Both governments expressed optimism that the upgraded infrastructure will further strengthen bilateral ties and support the increasing flow of visitors and businesses between the two nations.
