The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal has inaugurated camp offices in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir to ease litigants’ burden, bringing pending cases down from 300,000 to 60,000.
The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal has set up temporary camp offices in the states of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. The move aims to bring the appellate process closer to taxpayers and reduce the travel and time costs for litigants who previously had to appear at the main tribunal bench in New Delhi.
According to the tribunal’s latest data, the number of pending appeals has fallen sharply, dropping from roughly three lakh cases to about sixty thousand since the camp offices became operational. This decline reflects both the increased accessibility of the tribunal and the expedited handling of cases at the regional level.
Tribunal officials said that the camp offices will continue to function on a regular schedule, allowing parties to file documents, attend hearings and receive updates without long delays. They emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader effort to decongest the central bench and improve overall efficiency of tax dispute resolution.
Stakeholders, including tax practitioners, have welcomed the development, noting that it should lower litigation costs and speed up dispute closure for businesses and individuals alike.
