The Tripura Handloom and Handicrafts Development Mission (TRLM) and IIT Roorkee have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening women‑run handloom businesses across Tripura.

The Tripura Handloom and Handicrafts Development Mission (TRLM) and the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee formalised a partnership by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) focused on uplifting women‑led handloom enterprises in the state of Tripura. The agreement was signed in a ceremony attended by senior officials from both organisations, underscoring a collaborative effort between a state development body and a premier technical institute.

Under the MoU, IIT Roorkee will provide technical expertise, design support and research assistance to handloom units managed by women entrepreneurs. The collaboration is expected to include skill‑training workshops, product development guidance, and the introduction of modern production techniques that respect traditional craftsmanship.

The partnership aims to expand market access for these enterprises, improve product quality, and create sustainable livelihoods for women in rural and semi‑urban areas of Tripura. By leveraging academic resources, the initiative seeks to preserve the region’s handloom heritage while generating economic growth.

Implementation will be phased, with initial pilot projects slated to commence later this year, followed by broader rollout based on outcomes and feedback from participating weavers.
