The Institute of Health Sciences (IGIMS) in Patna successfully performed Bihar’s inaugural liver transplant fully financed by the state government.

The Institute of Health Sciences (IGIMS) in Patna has carried out Bihar’s first liver transplant that is entirely funded by the state government. The procedure was completed without any out‑of‑pocket expense for the patient, marking a historic step for publicly financed advanced medical care in the state.

The operation demonstrates the growing capability of government hospitals in Bihar to deliver complex organ‑transplant services that were previously available only in private facilities or in other states. By covering the full cost, the government aims to make life‑saving treatments accessible to economically weaker sections.

State health officials welcomed the milestone, saying it reflects the success of recent efforts to strengthen tertiary care infrastructure under the health department’s initiatives. The transplant is expected to encourage more patients to seek similar treatment within the state, reducing the need for costly travel.

Hospital administrators indicated that the success will pave the way for additional fully funded transplants, including kidney and heart procedures, as part of a broader strategy to expand organ‑donation and transplant programmes in Bihar.
