ICAR's Aqua Village initiative in Meghalaya is raising fish yields by providing ponds, fingerlings and technical support to local farmers.
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has introduced its Aqua Village model in Meghalaya to strengthen aquaculture among small‑scale farmers. The programme establishes community fish ponds, supplies quality fingerlings and feed, and delivers hands‑on training on best‑practice fish farming.
Early implementation reports a clear rise in fish yields per hectare, translating into higher incomes for participating households. The model also facilitates market linkages, helping growers sell their produce to regional buyers efficiently.
ICAR officials suggest that the Aqua Village framework could be replicated in other hilly regions of the country to expand sustainable fish production and rural livelihoods.
