The Indian Council of Agricultural Research highlighted that improving seed quality is essential to raise farm productivity and increase earnings for Meghalaya’s farmers.
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has underscored the importance of quality seed production as a cornerstone for enhancing agricultural productivity in Meghalaya. In a recent statement, the council noted that superior seeds can significantly raise crop yields and reduce the vulnerability of smallholder farms.
Meghalaya, with its hilly terrain and diverse agro‑ecological zones, relies heavily on agriculture for livelihoods. By adopting certified, high‑performing seed varieties, farmers can achieve better harvests, which in turn translates into higher household incomes and greater food security across the state.
ICAR plans to collaborate with state agricultural departments and local seed growers to expand research, provide training, and ensure the timely distribution of quality seeds. The council urges farmers to shift from traditional, untested seed sources to certified varieties to reap the promised productivity gains.
