A relief packet dropped from an Indian Air Force helicopter is reported to have caused the death of a flood‑affected resident in Odisha.
Earlier this week, a resident of flood‑stricken Odisha lost his life after a relief packet delivered by an Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopter is said to have struck him. Local witnesses reported that the package, intended for distribution among flood victims, fell from the aircraft and hit the victim on the head, leading to fatal injuries.
The state has been grappling with severe flooding after heavy monsoon rains, prompting the IAF to launch aerial relief missions across the affected districts. Helicopters have been used to drop food, medicines and other essential supplies to isolated villages where road access is cut off.
Following the incident, district officials opened an inquiry to ascertain the exact circumstances of the drop and to determine whether safety protocols were followed. The IAF has expressed condolences to the family and pledged full cooperation with the investigation.
Authorities have urged residents to stay clear of the drop zones until the area is declared safe, emphasizing that relief operations must balance urgency with caution to prevent further mishaps.
