City officials and artisans in Hyderabad are promoting biodegradable Ganesh idols this year, aiming to reduce water pollution during the festival.
Hyderabad’s municipal corporation has urged temples and organizers to use eco‑friendly Ganesh idols made from natural clay and other biodegradable materials for this year’s Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. The move comes after growing concerns that traditional plaster‑of‑Paris idols, painted with synthetic colours, dissolve in water and release harmful chemicals into the Hussain Sagar lake and other water bodies.
Artisans across the city have been conducting workshops to train on the preparation of clay‑based idols that can be safely immersed without polluting water. Local NGOs are also distributing kits containing natural dyes and guidance on proper disposal, encouraging devotees to adopt greener practices.
