The Himachal Pradesh government has amended its resident doctors recruitment policy to allow postgraduate doctors from PGI and AIIMS to be appointed in state hospitals.
The state health department issued a notification on Wednesday that the existing resident doctors policy has been revised to open positions for postgraduate doctors who have completed their training at the Post‑Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The amendment aims to strengthen specialist manpower in Himachal's public hospitals and address long‑standing shortages in critical specialties.
According to the new guidelines, eligible candidates must hold a recognized postgraduate degree from PGI or AIIMS and meet the standard eligibility criteria for resident doctor appointments, including age limits and service bond requirements. The selection will be conducted through the usual merit‑based process overseen by the state health recruitment board.
Health officials said the move is expected to improve patient care quality, especially in tertiary care centers such as Indira Gandhi Medical College in Shimla and Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College in Kangra. The department will begin accepting applications from the next recruitment cycle, with further details to be released on the official health ministry portal.
The policy change reflects a broader national trend of leveraging highly trained specialists from premier institutes to bolster state health systems. It also provides a new career pathway for PGI and AIIMS alumni seeking government service in the hills.
Stakeholders, including medical associations, have welcomed the amendment, noting that it could reduce patient outflow to private facilities and enhance the overall capacity of Himachal's public health infrastructure.
