The Himachal Pradesh cabinet has tabled a proposal to impose an annual tax on cash‑in‑transit vehicles and mobile food vendors, aiming to boost state revenue.

The Himachal Pradesh cabinet approved a draft bill that would levy an annual tax on cash‑in‑transit vans and on vehicles that operate as mobile food outlets, commonly known as “food on wheels.” The move is part of the state’s effort to broaden its fiscal base and generate additional revenue for development projects.
Under the proposal, each cash‑van would pay a fixed amount per year, while mobile food vendors would be charged based on the size and frequency of operation. Officials estimate that the new levy could add several crores of rupees to the state’s coffers within the first fiscal year.
State officials said the tax will be collected through existing transport department channels, and the rates will be announced after a public consultation period. Opposition leaders have expressed concerns that the additional cost could burden small operators, but the government maintains that the measure is necessary to fund infrastructure and social welfare schemes.
If passed, the tax is slated to take effect from the beginning of the next financial year, with compliance monitored by the transport and finance departments.
