The Karnataka High Court ordered the BBMP and BWSSB to remove illegal structures and stop drainage water from entering the city’s major lakes within 30 days.

The Karnataka High Court has issued a strict 30‑day deadline to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) to clear encroachments from the city’s major lakes. The order aims to protect the lakes from further degradation and to prevent storm‑water runoff from entering the water bodies.

According to the court’s directive, BBMP officials must identify and remove all illegal structures that have been built on or around the lake perimeters. Simultaneously, BWSSB is required to implement measures that stop internal drainage water from flowing into the lakes, thereby improving water quality.

The High Court emphasized that failure to comply within the stipulated period will attract contempt proceedings. Both agencies have been instructed to submit a compliance report to the court before the deadline expires.

The ruling comes amid growing concerns over the rapid loss of lake ecosystems in Bengaluru, which serve as crucial sources of groundwater recharge and urban cooling.
