Heritage Walks and Storytelling Boost Tourism in Indore, Attract More Foreign Visitors

The Madhya Pradesh Travel Association convened a discussion on World Tourism Day at a venue in Indore to examine ways of revitalising tourism in the Malwa region. Speakers including Sangamitra Singh and Jafar Ansari highlighted the role of heritage walks that guide visitors through the city’s colonial-era buildings, ancient temples and traditional markets. They also advocated for "kissa‑goi" – a storytelling format that narrates local legends and historical anecdotes, thereby enriching the visitor experience.

According to the panel, such immersive experiences have already begun to pull foreign tourists who are seeking culturally rich itineraries beyond the usual circuit. The association plans to integrate these walks into official tourism packages and promote them through digital campaigns targeting overseas markets.

The officials urged local authorities to invest in preserving architectural sites and training guides in multiple languages, ensuring that the heritage narrative remains authentic while being accessible to an international audience. The initiative aims to position Indore as a cultural gateway in central India, complementing broader state‑level tourism strategies.
