Heavy rain hit Chennai and Karaikal today, prompting authorities to shut schools and colleges.
The Meteorological Department recorded intense rainfall across Chennai and the coastal enclave of Karaikal on Tuesday, with showers lasting several hours. Local authorities responded by ordering the closure of all schools and colleges in the affected areas to ensure student safety.
Transport services experienced disruptions as waterlogged roads slowed traffic and caused temporary flooding in low‑lying neighbourhoods. Police and municipal crews were deployed to clear drainage channels and assist commuters.
Officials advised residents to avoid non‑essential travel, stay indoors, and monitor further updates from the weather department as the downpour is expected to continue into the evening.
