Intense monsoon showers have drenched eastern India, causing waterlogging and disrupting daily life across several states.

The monsoon trough over the Bay of Bengal intensified early this week, delivering prolonged heavy rain to the eastern region of the country. States such as West Bengal, Odisha and Bihar reported widespread waterlogging, with several districts experiencing road closures and delayed train services. Local authorities have activated emergency response teams to clear drainage channels and assist residents in affected neighborhoods.

Meteorological officials said the current system is expected to linger for the next 48 hours, maintaining rainfall rates that could exceed 100 millimetres in some pockets. Agricultural fields, particularly those awaiting sowing, are at risk of soil erosion and delayed planting schedules. The heavy downpour also raised concerns about the stability of riverbanks along the Ganges and Brahmaputra tributaries.

While relief efforts are underway, officials urged citizens to avoid non-essential travel, stay away from flooded areas, and follow updates from the state disaster management agencies. The situation remains under close monitoring as the monsoon continues to dominate weather patterns across the eastern belt.
