The Chief Minister of Haryana said that changing climate patterns require the introduction of new cotton varieties suited to hotter and more erratic conditions.

New Delhi – The Chief Minister of Haryana highlighted that rising temperatures and unpredictable rainfall are putting pressure on the state’s cotton growers. He urged agricultural scientists and seed companies to accelerate the breeding of varieties that can tolerate heat stress and water scarcity. The call comes as cotton remains a key cash crop for many farmers in the region, contributing significantly to Haryana’s agrarian economy. The CM emphasized that adapting to climate change is essential to sustain yields and protect farmer incomes. He asked the state agriculture department to coordinate with research institutions to fast‑track field trials of such resilient seeds.

The minister’s statement underscores a broader national push to align crop development with climate projections. Experts say that introducing heat‑tolerant and drought‑resistant cotton could reduce reliance on irrigation and lower production costs. The Haryana government plans to allocate resources for testing and scaling up promising varieties across vulnerable districts.

Stakeholders, including farmer groups and seed firms, have welcomed the appeal, noting that timely access to suitable seeds can mitigate the risks posed by an increasingly volatile climate. The CM pledged continued monitoring of weather trends and will review progress in upcoming agricultural policy meetings.
