The historic Gopal Temple in Gwalior showcased a lavish Janmashtami decoration, with Lord Krishna and Radha draped in jewelry valued at more than ₹120 crore.
The Gopal Temple, a relic of Gwalior's princely past, became the centrepiece of Janmashtami celebrations this year. Temple authorities unveiled a unique adornment in which the deities of Krishna and Radha were clothed in precious gems and gold ornaments whose combined worth exceeds ₹120 crore, making it the most expensive religious decoration in the world.
Officials said the elaborate jewellery, sourced from renowned jewelers, includes diamonds, rubies and emeralds set in intricate designs that reflect traditional Indian craftsmanship. The display aims to highlight the temple’s historic royal patronage and attract devotees and tourists alike.
The temple, already known for its distinctive festive décor, drew large crowds who gathered to witness the opulent presentation. Security and crowd‑management measures were heightened to ensure a smooth observance of the festival.
While the cost of the adornments has sparked admiration, it also underscores the cultural emphasis placed on lavish worship practices in certain heritage sites across the country.
