The Gujarat government has announced a project to modernise its 11kV distribution network by replacing ageing overhead lines with upgraded conductors and laying underground cables in selected areas.

The state electricity department of Gujarat disclosed plans to revamp its 11kV distribution infrastructure across the region. The initiative involves replacing deteriorating overhead conductors with higher‑capacity lines and installing underground cables in densely populated or environmentally sensitive zones.

Officials said the upgrades aim to reduce power losses, improve reliability and enhance safety for residents. The project will be executed in phases, prioritising areas that experience frequent outages or face space constraints for overhead structures.

Funding for the programme will be sourced from the state’s capital allocation for power sector development, with technical support from national utility agencies. Completion timelines have not been disclosed, but the department expects the first phase to commence within the next few months.

The move aligns with Gujarat’s broader objective of modernising its power grid to meet growing demand from industrial, commercial and residential consumers while adhering to sustainability goals.
