The Gujarat government has intensified random checks on food items ahead of Diwali to curb adulteration, focusing on sweets, snacks and cooking oils.

The Gujarat state administration announced a heightened inspection drive targeting food products as the Diwali festival nears, aiming to prevent adulteration that could jeopardise consumer health.
Food safety officials will conduct random sampling across retail markets, wholesale depots and street vendors, with particular scrutiny on sweets, snack items and cooking oils that see a surge in demand during the celebrations.
Under the Food Safety and Standards Act, any item found to contain prohibited additives or sub‑standard ingredients will be seized and the responsible manufacturers or sellers penalised.
The department has also launched a public awareness campaign urging shoppers to read labels carefully and report suspicious products, while enforcement teams coordinate with local police for swift action.
This crackdown forms part of Gujarat’s broader effort to safeguard public health during the high‑spending festive season.
