A legal case has been filed against three Gujarat political parties alleging they received donations worth ₹1,869 crore and evaded taxes amounting to ₹560 crore.
A criminal complaint was lodged this week against three major political parties in Gujarat, accusing them of accepting undisclosed contributions totalling approximately ₹1,869 crore. The filing, made by the Enforcement Directorate, also alleges that the parties deliberately avoided tax liabilities of about ₹560 crore by routing funds through shell entities and falsifying accounts.
According to the charge sheet, the donations were collected over several election cycles and were not reported in the parties' audited financial statements. Investigators say the money was moved through a network of trusts and offshore accounts, enabling the parties to conceal the true source and scale of the contributions while evading income tax and Goods and Services Tax obligations.
The authorities have seized relevant documents and are conducting forensic audits of the parties' bookkeeping. If proven, the allegations could lead to severe penalties, including fines and possible disqualification of elected representatives under the Representation of the People Act.
Party spokespersons have denied any wrongdoing, stating that the contributions were lawful and that the case is politically motivated. The matter is now before the courts, where the prosecution will seek a trial to determine the veracity of the financial misconduct claims.
