The Gujarat government has unveiled a Rs 100 crore project to establish a marine biotechnology corridor in Porbandar, aiming to boost research and local employment. The initiative will focus on harnessing marine resources for industrial and academic development.
The Gujarat government has announced a Rs 100 crore investment to create a marine biotechnology corridor in the coastal city of Porbandar. The project is designed to tap the state’s rich marine biodiversity and convert it into a hub for research and innovation.
The corridor will host state‑of‑the‑art laboratories, incubation centres and collaborative platforms that bring together universities, industry players and start‑ups. By fostering a bio‑economy ecosystem, the initiative aims to generate skilled jobs and stimulate the local economy.
Officials said the first phase will begin next year, with the full corridor expected to be operational by 2026. The plan also includes training programmes for the workforce and incentives for private investment in marine biotech.
If successful, Porbandar could become a flagship destination for marine science and technology in India, positioning Gujarat as a leader in the emerging bio‑industry sector.
