The Gujarat cabinet has approved a notification introducing a Uniform Civil Code and mandating the registration of live‑in relationships, aiming to standardise personal laws across the state.
Gujarat's state cabinet has formally notified the introduction of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) that seeks to bring uniformity to personal laws for all residents, irrespective of religion. The same notification also stipulates that couples living together without formal marriage must register their relationship with the local municipal authority.
The registration process is expected to involve submission of basic identity documents and a declaration of cohabitation, after which a certificate will be issued. Officials say the move is intended to provide legal recognition and protection to partners in live‑in arrangements, covering matters such as inheritance, maintenance and dispute resolution.
The state government has indicated that the UCC notification aligns with the central government's long‑term objective of a common civil law framework for the country. Implementation details, including the effective date and procedural guidelines, will be communicated by the Home Department in the coming weeks.
