A Gujarat BJP legislator clarified that the Citizenship Amendment Act is designed to uphold the dignity of refugees and does not entail revocation of Indian citizenship.
In a recent statement, a Gujarat member of the Bharatiya Janata Party emphasized that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is not a tool for revoking Indian citizenship. The MP highlighted that the legislation’s core purpose is to extend dignity and legal protection to refugees from neighboring countries who belong to specific religious communities.
The law, passed by Parliament in 2019, has been the subject of intense public debate across the country. While critics argue that it discriminates on religious grounds, the Gujarat MP reiterated that the act merely offers a pathway for eligible refugees to obtain Indian citizenship without stripping existing citizens of their status.
The spokesperson did not provide additional details on implementation but urged the public to view the CAA as a humanitarian measure aimed at safeguarding vulnerable populations seeking shelter in India.
