A Great Indian bustard, released into the wild just four days prior, was killed by a fox while drinking water, according to satellite tracking data.
A rare Great Indian bustard, which had been released into its natural habitat only four days earlier, has been confirmed dead. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by conservation efforts aimed at reviving this endangered species.
According to data from the satellite tag attached to the bird, the cause of death was an attack by a fox. The tracking signals indicated that the bustard was in the vicinity of a water source when the predator struck.
The bird was found while it was drinking water, a moment of vulnerability that likely contributed to the fatal encounter. This event underscores the delicate balance between reintroducing wildlife and the threats posed by natural predators in the ecosystem.
Conservationists are now analyzing the incident to understand the specific circumstances of the attack. The loss serves as a sobering reminder of the risks involved in wild release programs for critically endangered birds.
