A GPS‑based survey in Assam has recorded about 38,000 elephant positions, enabling researchers to chart the state’s principal wildlife corridors.
A collaborative research team equipped with GPS collars has logged roughly 38,000 distinct elephant locations across Assam’s forested landscape. The data, collected over several months, were processed to identify patterns of movement and seasonal shifts.
Analysis of the GPS points revealed a network of high‑traffic routes that link fragmented habitats, many of which coincide with known human‑elephant conflict zones. By mapping these corridors, officials hope to prioritize habitat restoration and implement targeted mitigation measures.
State wildlife authorities said the study provides the most comprehensive spatial picture of elephant dynamics in the region to date, and will inform future land‑use planning, road‑crossing structures, and community outreach programs aimed at reducing conflict.
