Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the government will issue a consultation paper on a new artificial intelligence law within the next few weeks.

The Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has confirmed that a consultation paper on a new artificial intelligence (AI) law will be released in the coming weeks. In a statement, Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the risks posed by AI have now crossed a threshold, necessitating a formal legal framework.
The consultation paper is expected to invite inputs from industry experts, civil society, and other stakeholders on how best to regulate AI applications across sectors. It will likely address issues such as data privacy, algorithmic transparency, and liability for AI‑driven decisions.
Experts note that the draft will be a significant step toward aligning India’s AI governance with global standards while safeguarding public interests. The government has indicated that the law will aim to promote innovation while mitigating potential harms.
Once the consultation period ends, the ministry will review the feedback and move forward with drafting the final legislation. The process is anticipated to take several months before the law is enacted.
