The government has imposed a tighter limit on sugar inventories even though retail prices have fallen about 15% since August.

New Delhi – The central government announced a reduction in the permissible stock of sugar held by traders and processors, citing the need to stabilise the market despite a 15% decline in retail prices since August. The move comes as the sugar sector grapples with lower demand and excess carry‑over from the previous season.
The tightened stock ceiling is intended to curb hoarding and align supply with the softened price environment. Officials said the adjustment will be communicated to industry bodies for immediate implementation.
Analysts expect the policy to put downward pressure on inventories, potentially easing price volatility in the coming months. The sugar industry, a key agricultural commodity, will monitor the impact on cash flow and export plans as the new limit takes effect.
