After a 72‑hour strike at Hamidia Hospital in Bhopal, the state government agreed to increase intern doctors' monthly stipend by 50% to ₹21,500 and attached two police officers involved in the lathi‑charge incident.
Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh – The state government announced a 50 percent hike in the monthly stipend of MBBS interns, raising it to ₹21,500, following a three‑day protest that crippled services at Hamidia Hospital. The strike, which lasted 72 hours, forced the cancellation of more than 50 scheduled surgeries and highlighted long‑standing grievances over low pay and working conditions.
During the demonstration, police resorted to lathi charges and water‑cannon fire to disperse the crowd. Two constables who participated in the forceful dispersal have been attached to the line as disciplinary action. The move was taken to address concerns raised by the medical community about excessive use of force.
With the stipend increase approved, the interns called off the strike and resumed their duties, allowing the hospital to restart postponed operations and restore normal patient care.
