Government Introduces Mandatory Four‑Way Waste Segregation Rules

The central government has issued new regulations that make it compulsory to separate waste into four distinct streams at the source.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has rolled out a fresh set of waste‑management guidelines that require every waste generator to sort material at the point of disposal.

Under the new framework, households, commercial premises and institutions must separate waste into four categories: biodegradable, recyclable, hazardous and residual (non‑recyclable) waste.

The rules amend the Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, and prescribe penalties for non‑compliance, ranging from fines to legal action against repeat offenders.

Authorities say the four‑way segregation will boost recycling rates, cut the volume of waste sent to landfills and bring India closer to international best practices in solid‑waste handling.

Implementation will be phased, with state and local bodies conducting awareness drives and providing colour‑coded bins to facilitate the transition.
