State officials say a heightened risk of forest fires in Goa has prompted the launch of an early warning system to monitor and alert authorities.
Goa's extensive forested regions are entering a dry spell that could increase the likelihood of wildfires, officials warned on Monday. The state forest department highlighted that recent weather patterns have left vegetation unusually dry, raising concerns among local communities.
In response, the department, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology and the state disaster management authority, has begun designing an early warning system. The project will employ satellite imagery, ground sensors and real-time data analytics to detect fire-prone conditions and issue alerts to fire-fighting units.
The system is slated for pilot testing in the Western Ghats foothills later this year, with full deployment planned across all vulnerable forest zones by early next year. Training sessions for forest guards and local volunteers are also being organized to ensure rapid response.
Authorities emphasized that the warning network, combined with community awareness programmes, aims to minimise fire outbreaks and protect both biodiversity and livelihoods in the region.
