Goa police said the recent crackdown on the Chief Justice of India protest was warranted because participants had expressed support for activist Umar Khalid and had previously breached legal orders.

Goa police officials announced that the forceful dispersal of a recent protest demanding the resignation of the Chief Justice of India was based on two key factors. First, they said several demonstrators had openly voiced support for activist Umar Khalid, who is under investigation for alleged anti‑national activities. Second, the police highlighted that many participants had previously been cited for violating court orders and public assembly regulations.

According to the police statement, the combination of political alignment with a controversial figure and a record of non‑compliance created a "threat to public order," prompting authorities to intervene swiftly. The crackdown involved the deployment of riot control teams and the filing of cases against identified protestors.

Human rights observers have called for a transparent inquiry, urging that any action taken be proportionate and respect the right to peaceful assembly. The police, however, maintained that their response was lawful and necessary to prevent escalation.
