GI-Tagged Natural Farming Could Transform Northeast India into Global Export Hub

Experts say that granting Geographical Indication status to natural farming practices in the Northeast could boost export potential of the region’s organic produce.
Natural farming methods that avoid synthetic inputs are being considered for Geographical Indication (GI) tagging across several states in India’s Northeast. The move aims to certify the unique ecological and cultural attributes of the region’s organic produce, giving it a legally recognised brand in international markets.
Stakeholders argue that a GI tag would allow farmers to command premium prices, open new export channels, and attract foreign buyers seeking traceable, eco‑friendly commodities. By linking the farming technique to the geography, the tag could also protect traditional knowledge and prevent misuse of the region’s reputation.
The state governments, together with the Ministry of Agriculture, are reportedly drafting guidelines for the certification process, while farmer cooperatives are preparing documentation of their practices. If implemented, the initiative could diversify incomes for smallholders and position the Northeast as a competitive hub for organic exports.
