Former India all‑rounder Gautam Gambhir has been named head coach of the India A squad, and he warned that the upcoming series would pose a significant challenge for fast bowler Mohammed Shami.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Thursday that former India all‑rounder Gautam Gambhir would take charge of the India A team for the forthcoming series.
Gambhir, who captained India in 2011–12 and has coaching experience with the Indian Premier League side Rajasthan Royals, will lead the squad in a three‑day series against England A.
In a statement released by the BCCI, Gambhir said that the conditions and the quality of opposition would make it a tough test for fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who has been a key player for India in recent years.
The appointment comes as India A prepares to sharpen its players ahead of the national team’s schedule, and Gambhir’s remarks underline the competitive nature of the upcoming fixtures.
BCCI officials expressed confidence that Gambhir’s leadership would help India A develop talent and maintain high standards on the international stage.
