Severe riverbank erosion along the Ganga in Raghopur, Bhagalpur district has engulfed five structures, including a Bajrangbali temple, with the river advancing up to 150 metres.
The Ganga river has intensified its erosive activity in Raghopur, a village in the Kharik block of Bhagalpur district, causing a sudden loss of land along its banks. Local residents reported that the water has breached the riverbank and swept away five structures, among them a small Bajrangbali temple that served as a community worship place.
According to on‑site observations, the river has receded inland by roughly 150 metres, creating a deep gully that has swallowed the homes and the temple. The affected houses were primarily mud‑brick dwellings, and the loss has left several families displaced.
District officials have dispatched rescue teams and are assessing the extent of damage. Preliminary steps include setting up temporary shelters for the affected families and initiating a survey to determine whether further relocation is required. The administration has also warned nearby villages about the heightened risk of similar erosion in the coming weeks.
Riverbank erosion is a recurring challenge in Bihar, especially during the monsoon season when the Ganga swells. Experts say that unchecked erosion can undermine local infrastructure and agricultural land, prompting calls for reinforced embankments and regular monitoring.
The incident underscores the urgent need for coordinated disaster‑management measures in river‑prone districts, as authorities plan to mobilise additional resources to prevent a repeat of such devastation.
