On October 2, Amritsar observed Gandhi Jayanti by focusing on cleanliness, designating the day as Swachhata Awareness Day.
Amritsar commemorated Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 by officially declaring the occasion a Swachhata (cleanliness) Awareness Day. Municipal authorities, local schools and community groups gathered at prominent city spots to highlight the link between Mahatma Gandhi's principles and the nation's cleanliness drive.
The day featured organized cleaning activities in public areas, distribution of informational pamphlets on waste segregation, and short addresses by civic officials reminding citizens of Gandhi's emphasis on hygiene and self‑discipline. Participants were encouraged to adopt sustainable habits beyond the event.
Organisers said the initiative aims to reinforce the relevance of Gandhi's teachings in contemporary urban life, using the national holiday as a platform to promote a cleaner, healthier environment for Amritsar's residents.
The city plans to continue similar awareness programmes on future national holidays, integrating civic responsibility with cultural celebrations.
