More than 30 villages in Gopalganj district have been inundated after the Gandak river rose, affecting around 25,000 residents across 20 panchayats.

The Gandak River breached its banks in Gopalganj district of Bihar, causing water to flood over 30 villages in the region. The sudden rise in water level has left large tracts of agricultural land and homes under water, prompting immediate concern among local authorities.

According to district officials, the flood has impacted more than 20 panchayats, with an estimated 25,000 people displaced or cut off from basic services. Several hamlets report loss of livestock and damage to crops, compounding the hardship for families already dependent on agriculture.

The situation was aggravated by the failure of a local "Zamindari" embankment, which has raised fears of further breaches along the river course. State disaster management teams have been deployed to reinforce vulnerable sections of the embankments and to monitor water levels continuously.

Rescue and relief operations are now underway, with police, the National Disaster Response Force and local volunteers conducting evacuations and distributing essential supplies. Authorities have urged residents in low‑lying areas to remain vigilant and follow safety instructions as water levels continue to fluctuate.
