Gandak Ring Dam Breaches Near Sareya Panchayat, Flooding Villages in East Champaran

Around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, the ring dam on the Gandak River near Sareya Panchayat in East Champaran collapsed, sending floodwater into dozens of villages and agricultural fields.
The ring dam built across the Gandak River near Pandey Tola in Sareya Panchayat of Araij block, East Champaran, gave way at about 03:00 hrs on Tuesday. The breach was triggered by rising river pressure, causing the structure to fail suddenly.
Within minutes, a surge of water rushed downstream, inundating fields and entering roughly three dozen villages in the surrounding area. Residents reported rapid water rise that swept away crops, livestock and damaged homes.
Local authorities and disaster response teams were alerted immediately. Officials from the district disaster management cell have begun rescue operations, deploying boats and sandbags to protect remaining habitations while assessing the extent of damage.
Preliminary reports suggest that the breach may have compromised irrigation supplies for the region. Engineers are being called to inspect the damaged dam and to plan reconstruction to prevent a recurrence.
