The yield gap between French and German government bonds has widened, highlighting growing concerns over France's fiscal health.

Paris-based analysts observed that the spread between 10-year French OAT yields and German Bund yields expanded further this week, reaching levels not seen since early 2022. The widening gap reflects investors' heightened perception of risk surrounding France's public finances, as the country grapples with a large deficit and mounting debt.

The French Treasury has been under pressure to implement fiscal consolidation measures, but political resistance has slowed progress. As a result, market participants demand a higher risk premium, pushing borrowing costs above those of its eurozone counterpart.

European financial authorities noted that while the spread remains below the peaks of the 2010s sovereign debt crisis, the recent upward move signals renewed market vigilance. The trend may influence upcoming policy discussions in Brussels and Paris regarding budgetary reforms and eurozone solidarity mechanisms.

Economists caution that a persistent widening could raise the cost of financing for French public projects and increase the burden on taxpayers, unless corrective steps are taken promptly.
