Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that four semiconductor manufacturing plants are slated to be operational in India before the end of the year, marking a key milestone in the country’s chip‑making drive.

New Delhi – Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told reporters that four semiconductor fabrication units are expected to be up and running in India by the end of the calendar year. The statement was made during a briefing on the government's ongoing efforts to boost domestic electronics manufacturing.

The commissioning of these plants is seen as a major step toward reducing India's reliance on imported chips, which have long constrained the growth of the local technology sector. Industry analysts have highlighted the strategic importance of a robust semiconductor ecosystem for everything from smartphones to automotive electronics.

Vaishnaw's remarks come as part of a broader policy push that includes financial incentives, land allocation and skill‑development programmes aimed at attracting global chip makers to set up facilities in the country. While details of the individual projects were not disclosed, the minister emphasized that the timeline reflects the government's commitment to accelerating the sector.

If the plants become operational as projected, they could create a sizable number of jobs and stimulate ancillary industries, further strengthening India's position in the global technology supply chain.
