Four labourers from West Bengal were freed after spending 33 days in custody in Chhattisgarh, where they had been detained on a ‘Bangladeshi’ tag.
Four workers from West Bengal were released on Wednesday after being held for 33 days in a detention facility in Chhattisgarh. The men had been taken into custody earlier this month on allegations that they were illegal Bangladeshi migrants, a claim that later proved unsubstantiated.
State authorities said the detainees were examined by the district police and, after confirming their Indian citizenship, ordered their immediate release. No formal charges were filed against them, and they were handed over to local officials for repatriation to their home state.
Human rights groups have called for a review of the procedures that led to the prolonged detention, urging police to avoid profiling based on nationality. The released workers are expected to return to their employment in the construction sector in Bengal.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about migrant identification and the need for clearer guidelines to prevent wrongful arrests in the region.
