After voluntarily retiring from the IAS, Debashish Sharma joined the BJP and was awarded a nomination to contest the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in a by‑poll.
Former IAS officer Debashish Sharma announced his voluntary retirement from the service on 12 March 2024. Within a week of stepping down, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, signalling a swift transition from civil service to politics. The party formally nominated him for the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency in a by‑poll scheduled for 30 April. Sharma’s candidature follows the BJP’s strategy to field candidates with administrative experience in key seats. Analysts note that his background could appeal to voters seeking governance expertise.
