After the Madhya Pradesh High Court's ruling on OBC reservation, former chief minister Kamal Nath urged the state government to pass legislation reinstating the 27% quota, while Congress MP Vivek Tankha questioned the government's legal stance.

The Madhya Pradesh High Court recently delivered a verdict concerning the 27% reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs), a decision that has reignited political debate in the state. The ruling has prompted both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Indian National Congress to sharpen their positions on the reservation policy.

Former chief minister and senior Congress leader Kamal Nath publicly called for the state legislature to introduce a fresh law that would restore the 27% OBC quota. Nath argued that the reservation is essential for social equity and that a legislative solution would provide a more durable answer than judicial pronouncements.

Congress parliamentarian Vivek Tankha, speaking on the same issue, challenged the government's legal defence of its stance, suggesting that the administration's approach may not withstand further judicial scrutiny. Tankha's remarks added another layer to the growing political contest between the BJP and Congress over the reservation question.

The controversy is expected to influence upcoming political calculations in Madhya Pradesh, as both parties seek to mobilise their voter bases around the sensitive issue of caste-based reservations.
