Jagan expressed regret over his support for the 2023 Election Commission law and urged the government to set up an independent body for appointing officials.
Former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy said he now regrets having backed the 2023 amendment to the Election Commission Act. He told reporters that the law, which changed the procedure for appointing senior election officials, has eroded the perceived independence of the commission.
Jagan argued that a truly neutral, non‑partisan selection committee is essential to safeguard free and fair elections. He urged the state and central governments to create such a body without delay.
The remarks were made at a press conference in Hyderabad, where he also criticised the ruling party for ignoring opposition concerns about the law. Political analysts said his comments could fuel further debate ahead of the next state elections, when the Election Commission's role will be closely watched.
