The Karnataka Forest Department will distribute free medicinal plants to establish gardens in 1,000 state-run schools, aiming to raise student awareness of nature and Ayurveda.

The Karnataka Forest Department announced a programme to create medicinal‑plant gardens in 1,000 government schools across the state. Under the scheme, the department will supply seedlings of various therapeutic herbs to each school at no cost.

Schools will allocate dedicated plots within their campuses for the gardens, and teachers will receive guidance on planting, maintenance and integration of the initiative into the curriculum. The project seeks to provide students with practical exposure to biodiversity and the traditional Ayurvedic uses of native flora.

The department will also organise training sessions for teachers and monitor the progress of the gardens to ensure their sustainability. By linking environmental education with health knowledge, the initiative aims to foster a deeper appreciation of nature among young learners.

Officials expect the gardens to serve as living laboratories, offering hands‑on learning opportunities and encouraging interest in herbal medicine and sustainable agriculture among students.
