The Federation of Khasis and Jaintia Groups (FKJGP) has appealed to the Meghalaya state administration to adopt an 80:20 female‑to‑male ratio in the upcoming nursing recruitment at NEIGRIHMS.

The Federation of Khasis and Jaintia Groups (FKJGP) has formally requested the Meghalaya government to implement an 80:20 female‑to‑male ratio for the next round of nursing recruitment at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS). The appeal was submitted as the institute prepares to fill several nursing positions across its campuses in Shillong.

FKJGP argues that a higher proportion of women in nursing aligns with the traditionally female‑dominated nature of the profession and would promote gender equity in the state's health sector. The group highlighted that past recruitment drives have not consistently achieved a balanced gender mix, prompting the current demand for a clear quota.

The Meghalaya administration has not yet issued an official response, but officials indicated that the request will be reviewed in light of existing reservation policies and the institute's staffing needs. If adopted, the 80% female target could significantly increase employment opportunities for women in the region's healthcare workforce.

Stakeholders note that the move could also address broader objectives of improving patient care quality, as a more gender‑balanced nursing staff is often associated with better communication and empathy in clinical settings. The recruitment drive is expected to commence later this year, pending final approval of the proposed ratio.
