AIIMS Jodhpur reported India's first live birth using surgical sperm retrieval, IVF and ICSI for a couple suffering from obstructive azoospermia.

Doctors at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jodhpur successfully delivered a baby using a combination of surgical sperm retrieval, in‑vitro fertilisation (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). The procedure was carried out for a couple diagnosed with obstructive azoospermia, a condition that prevents natural sperm passage.

The medical team performed testicular sperm extraction to obtain viable sperm, fertilised the retrieved eggs through ICSI, and transferred the resulting embryo to the mother’s uterus. The pregnancy progressed without complications, culminating in a full‑term birth.

This marks the first documented case in Rajasthan where the full suite of advanced reproductive technologies was employed to achieve a live birth, offering a new treatment pathway for infertile couples in the region. Health officials said the success underscores AIIMS Jodhpur’s growing capability in assisted reproductive medicine.
