A pilot solar power system equipped with battery storage was launched in Spiti Valley, marking the region’s first renewable-energy installation of this type.
A pilot solar power plant with integrated battery storage was officially commissioned in Spiti Valley, Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. The project, described as the first of its kind in the high‑altitude region, was launched by local authorities in partnership with Utkarsh Classes.
The installation combines photovoltaic panels with large‑capacity batteries, allowing solar energy generated during daylight hours to be stored and supplied after sunset or during cloudy periods. This hybrid setup is designed to address the chronic power shortages that remote mountain villages face, where conventional grid connectivity is limited.
Officials said the system will provide a more reliable and cleaner source of electricity for households, schools and health centres, reducing dependence on diesel generators that currently dominate the energy mix. The move aligns with national goals to expand renewable energy infrastructure in difficult terrains and to cut carbon emissions.
Utkarsh Classes, which reported the launch, highlighted the project as a model for similar initiatives in other isolated Himalayan locations. Stakeholders anticipate that the success of the Spiti Valley plant could pave the way for larger scale battery‑storage solar deployments across the state.
The project is expected to improve the quality of life for local residents by ensuring uninterrupted power supply, supporting education, healthcare and small‑scale enterprises, while also showcasing the feasibility of clean energy solutions in extreme environments.
