A female elephant that fell into a well in Jharkhand has died, and local residents are opposing the authorities' plan to bury the carcass at the site.
A female elephant slipped into a deep well in a remote part of Jharkhand earlier this week. Rescue teams attempted to pull the animal out, but the animal could not be freed and later succumbed to its injuries.
Following the death, forest officials announced that the carcass would be buried at the well to prevent disease spread and protect the surrounding forest. However, villagers from nearby settlements have voiced strong opposition, arguing that the burial could contaminate groundwater and affect their agricultural lands.
Local leaders have called for an alternative disposal method, urging the department to consider cremation or transport to a designated wildlife facility. The episode underscores the growing tension between wildlife conservation efforts and the livelihoods of rural communities in the state.
