# Farmers’ Padayatra Demands Adequate Water Supply to Canals
### Massive protest planned in front of Raichur Deputy Commissioner’s office on October 27

**“Government must respond to farmers’ hardships”: Narasing Rao Sarkil**

**Devadurga, October 24:** Narasing Rao Sarkil, taluk president of the Karnataka Working Journalists Association, praised the padayatra organised by the Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha and agricultural labour organisations to highlight the various problems faced by farmers and agricultural labourers. He urged the government to respond promptly to farmers’ difficulties instead of neglecting the distribution of drought relief.

He was speaking after flagging off the padayatra at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Circle in Devadurga town on Saturday. The march is being organised to demand the fulfilment of various demands of farmers and agricultural labourers.

He expressed concern that farmers were facing severe hardships due to delays and negligence in the distribution of drought relief. He also pointed out that the implementation of the rotational water supply system in canals had resulted in water being stopped before crops were ready for harvest. As a result, farmers who had invested substantial amounts of money in cultivation were suffering heavy losses.

He appreciated the organisations for taking up the issues through a padayatra and said such movements could draw the government’s attention to public problems and help secure solutions. He wished the march success and expressed hope that the legitimate demands of farmers and agricultural labourers would be fulfilled.

## “₹2,500 drought relief is insufficient”: Shabbir Jalahalli

Shabbir Jalahalli, state secretary of the Building Construction Workers’ Union, said that although the state government had declared Devadurga taluk drought-affected, the announced relief of ₹2,500 per farmer was not even sufficient to purchase one bag of fertiliser.

He alleged that governments were neglecting farmers instead of addressing their hardships.

He stated that farmers would join the padayatra from four directions and that more than 2,000 farmers were expected to participate in the massive protest scheduled to be held in front of the Raichur Deputy Commissioner’s office on October 27.

He further pointed out that although hundreds of crores of rupees had been spent on repairing the Narayanapura Right Bank Canal system, adequate water was still not reaching farmers at the tail-end stretches of the canals. The lack of irrigation water was pushing farmers into a debt trap, he said.

He demanded a loan waiver of ₹25,000 for every farmer and the proper distribution of drought relief.

## Various organisations extend support to the protest

On the occasion, Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha taluk secretary Mounesh Jalahalli, Mahalinga Doddamani, Journalists Association general secretary Nagaraj Telkar, Raju Nayak, Santosh Tyapli, Lakshman Parapur, Nagaraj Parapur, Sharanappa Karalagunti, Chandrashekhar, Naresh, Basavaraj Lingadahalli, Hanumanth Mandalagudda, Basavaraj Vandali, Venkatesh Tyapli, Mallayya, Abram Kamaladinni, Hanumanth Madiwal, Ranganath Bunkaldoddi, Nagendra Mandalagudda, Mamsayya Dore and several others were present.
